On the second day we walked from our Air B&B to the Soulard Farmers Market. The kids were cultured to St. Louis vibe (both good and bad) on this walk and we used this lesson to teach them about always being alert to their surroundings but not allowing fear to keep them from seeing the world. And always stay close to Mom and Dad. Maclyn also learned a new word: gang. (face palm) Nothing bad happened to us, but we did learn from our neighbor that the area we were walking to the farmers market was not a good place to be at night because of recent shootings and gang activity. We appreciated the information, but maybe should have not been so loudly stated in front of our 7 year old. Ha! AND the farmers market was a bust (even though it was technically open) because it was too early in the week.
After our adventure to the Farmers Market we took the kids to eat at Carl's Drive-In, a historic diner on Route 66, and then on to Grants Farm. This is a very underrated and free place!! We had so much fun!! It even rained on us and we enjoyed it! We will definitely be going back! The free beer was an added bonus! (now: the kids add-ons to feed the animals or ride the carousel are not free, but it is certainly worth it!)
