In December Keagan had his very first middle school dance, the Holly Ball. It was sponsored by Beta Club (which Keags is VP of) and the dance occurred at school with teachers and staff chaperoning. (there hasn't been a middle school dance in many years because of behavior and lack of responsible chaperones so this was actually a "first" for all the kids!) Keagan helped with the planning of this dance and initially thought he had to "work" it so he wouldn't be able to attend. Once this was clarified, he was excited to discuss the potential dates. We talked with him and gave him some guidelines and asked who his prospects were. He told us of a couple of 8th grade girls he was interested in but they were 8th graders and probably wouldn't say yes. He then gave us a bunch of No's and so we never really landed on anyone.
Fast-forward a couple days and I was on my way back from a run with Kaycee and Finn came screaming out of the house that his friend Addy called ("and she never calls me" he said) and told him that Keagan called Kylie and asked her to go to the dance with him! Keagan was getting ready for his basketball game that night and not home yet, so that threw me off. And Finn didn't know if she said yes! Later that night after the basketball game, Keagan still hadn't said anything. So when we asked him, he acted all nonchalant about it and said she said yes! Apparently he called her in front of the basketball team, she asked if he was joking, and when he said nope so she said sure! Kylie (and Addy) go to church with us and play soccer also, so the boys have grown up with them. Kylie is an 8th grader, but her and Keagan have been friends for a long time. We were excited for them, and after talking with her mom about logistics, everything was set!
The day of the dance, we picked up Kylie (and her friend, who happened to be at her house getting ready with her) and took the kids to the dance. Keagan was a gentleman and opened the door for her, and was super sweet the whole evening. Even in the pictures I got from teachers (it helps to know people in the school system) it appears that he was a good date and stayed with her the whole time. After the dance, we took the kids to eat and a bunch of other friends showed up.
And I know you are wondering...but, no, they are not "dating." Or whatever.
